BusMinder : Real-time Public Transit Reminders

What is BusMinder

BusMinder is an Open Source (AGPL) web application that creates email and SMS reminders, based on real-time public transit information.

The reference implementation of BusMinder lives in a sandbox, generously hosted by Azavea. BusMinder's hosting and a portion of the development is sponsored by Azavea's internal research program.

Why Create Another App?

This application was inspired by the MBTA's Real Time Application Challenge, held in February of 2010. The application was designed to showcase what could be done with real-time information coming from buses and other public transit vehicles.

The application evolved, and generalized the transit agencies, and now supports multiple transit agencies. At the time of this writing (January 3rd, 2011), BusMinder supports the following transit agencies:

AC Transit: Oakland, CA and the East Bay metro area
California University of Pennsylvania: California, PA campus shuttle
Charles River EZRide: Cambridge, MA commuter shuttle
Charm City Circulator: Baltimore, MD commuter shuttle
DC Circulator: Washington DC
MBTA: Boston, MA metro area
MIT: Cambridge, MA MIT campus shuttle
Portland Streetcar: Portland, OR streetcars
Rutgers: Rutgers main and Newark campus shuttles
SF Muni: San Francisco, CA buses, trolleys, streetcars, and cable cars
Toronto TTC: Toronto, ON Transit Commission
Unitrans: Davis, CA University of California at Davis campus shuttle
Western Kentucky University: Bowling Green, KY campus shuttle
